Jim, I know a few turtle geeks and it is a Western Pond Turtle, she found it in a gravel parking lot and brought it to the reserviour behind the ranch. I think it's very very happy now. We have all sorts of orphan animals on the ranch. It's a true "funny farm:.

Looks like a mud turtle! Don't know what your mom did with it, but for what it's worth, they're aquatic.
They like crossing roads after rain.
I had one for a pet when I was a kid.
